Mapping the blockchain universe
At Theta we study blockchain like a specialized VC. At Theta we identify the key areas where blockchain is creating value, the relevant ecosystems and application areas that come into play and study how developments different across global regions. Based on this first hand conviction, we construct a map of the blockchain ecosystem that our program looks to cover. Not to call out winners early, but to optimize for capturing what turn out to be these winners.

Partnering with specialized managers
Blockchain requires specialized managers. 95% of early stage funding is coming from a new cohort of VC investors that are crypto-native. Since 2017, we have built strategic partnerships with the top players in this universe. We collaborate with agile, seed-stage managers to secure deep “look-through” ownership across the ecosystem, while partnering with larger firms to double down on breakout winners at Series A and beyond. This hybrid approach ensures we own the foundational companies and networks of the next decade.
Leveraging scale for fee efficiency
There is a persistent misconception that the Fund of Funds model inherently adds an expensive fee layer. At Theta, we have inverted this dynamic. We identified early on that the standard double-fee structure was inefficient for large allocators. We use our scale as a strategic anchor investor to actively negotiate fee discounts, side letters, and access to special low-fee share classes that are strictly unavailable to smaller Limited Partners.
This active management of cost structures allows us to drive down the effective fees of the underlying portfolio. We aim to minimize the friction of the Fund of Funds layer significantly. We effectively wholesale access to the industry’s most exclusive products and pass those efficiencies through to the fund. This means our investors often pay less in total fees than they would if they attempted to access these underlying funds individually.
Completing our portfolio construction with co-investments
Operating at the epicenter of more crypto-native VC relationships than anyone globally gives us unparalleled deal flow. We leverage this network to execute targeted co-investments, allowing us to eliminate portfolio blind spots and aggressively double down on the sectors seeing breakout adoption. This tactical layer ensures we maintain high-conviction exposure where it matters most.
